A high maintenance unit 2010-08-24 |
| By J. Shih (Los Angeles, CA United States) |
I've used roomba for about 5 years (Discovery series), it cleans fine as advertised. It's pretty cool, but it needs a constant maintenance which defeat the purpose of time saving. My roomba's 6th battery just died and I'm going back to the good old low maintenance long lasting plug in vacuum cleaner.
Pro
- it really works as it advertises
Con
- it needs to be clean after each use
- dust build up blocks the sensors, which cause it runs in circles (like dog chases its tail)
- Roomba needs to be plug-in to the charger at 24/7 when it's not being used or it could cause problems with roomba. It's not only a waste of electricity, but it also shortens battery's life. That translates into more costs in a long run. My 6 roomba batteries costed about $200+, not to mention 24/7 x 5 years of plug in charger electricity bill. Here's a quick math
$350 - Roomba
$250 - 6 batteries & filters
$200 - 5 yrs 24/7 plug in electricity(a pure guess)
#@ - Time spent on maintenance
$800 - Total
I'm definitely going back to the good old vacuum cleaner. Goodbye Roomba.

better than 560 2010-08-24 |
| By M. Cheung |
| I have both model 560 and 530. I like roomba a lot as I hate doing vacuuming. Both models works really well that they pick up lots of dust from carpet (not so well on hard wood floor though as they just push the little stuff around). I prefer the 530 model better because it's easier to clean the brushes. There is this groove on the ends of the brush of the 560 model that keep accummulate my long hair and it's very hard to clear that even with scissors. And I find myself don't really do the regular schedule cleaning that 560 model has. Anyways, I love my roombas and highly recommend it!!!! |
Carpets Squeaky-Clean 2010-08-23 |
| By SARAH J WILLIAMS |
Got this two months ago on sale at Sears for $279. At the time, I wanted the scheduling ability of the 560, but the price of the 530 was right. I now realize that the scheduling feature would increase the likelihood of the Roomba catching me off guard, vacuuming when I didn't have the cat toys picked up off the floor. Granted, the Roomba would just go around them, but it's nice to have the entire floor clean.
The Roomba is really awesome. I did my annual deep-cleaning of the carpets before buying it, and each time I use it, the carpets have that "just shampooed" squeak to them. It also corners/edges better than my full-sized vacuum and always goes under the furniture. I really enjoy the noises it makes!
Two downsides:
1. No standard HEPA, so I'm going to try the after-market filter in the hopes it doesn't decrease suction.
2. Roomba got confined to smaller rooms like walk-in closets and hallways when I tried to do the whole house on one battery charge. My revised strategy of one room per cleaning cycle/battery charge seems to work better, and sometimes I'll just wall-off the closet or hallway. This means I have to pick up the Roomba and carry it to different parts of the one-story house. Not a big deal, but not 100% automated either.
And finally: My kitten is wary, but not terrified of the Roomba. |
Love the iRobot 2010-08-22 |
| By Carolyn Mchale (Washington DC) |
| My friend demonstrated it while we were visiting with her. Before I saw it I thought it was just another gadget...but not after the demo! I had to have one. We got it and have put it to use. It takes about 25 minutes to do a room, but you can be doing other things while it is working away. It is amazing! It cleans under things that you haven't touched in years...all those dust bunnies under the bed and furniture are gone. We named ours Jeeves. You do have to pick up before you run it, but that is so it can do a more thorough job. We have 2 controllers that stop the robot from going past them. I really only use one of them which I position near the computers. I don't want Jeeves running into the computers. Otherwise, if I want Jeeves to clean just the dining room/living room/kitchen I close the other doors so he can't enter and "get lost". Amazing the dirt it picks up. When we have people over to visit we usually give a small demo of how Jeeves operates and they are amazed. Get one, you will love it!! |
Battery replacement 2010-08-19 |
| By Gary B. Dreher |
I've had my Roomba for about 3-4 years and recently it doesn't seem to hold a charge for long enough to clean a room. Is it time to replace the battery or could something else be broken?
Any comments will help. |
